EFFECT OF HOME-BASED EDUCATION: Impact on Scientific Concepts among Six-Year Olds in Turkey

Record: Özlem Yurt and Serap Demiriz, “Effect of Home-Based Education Program on Six-Year-Old Children’s Acquisition of Scientific Concept” in International Journal of Human Sciences 11, no. 1 (2014): 1-19.

Summary: As this article is written in Turkish and I know neither the language nor anyone who does, I will limit myself in this post to reproducing the English-language abstract provided by the publisher:

Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the effect of “Home-Based Education Program Based on Daily Life Activities” on acquisition of scientific concepts of six years old children.  The sampling of this study was composed of 44 children in experimental group, 45 children in control group and 89 children in total.  Before and after the Home-Based Education Program (HBEP), “The Scientific Concept Checklist” was used to determine the scientific concept the parents and children who are in the experiment and control group. At the end of HBEP, significant differences between the SCCL scores of children in experimental and
control groups were found in favor of the control group. In the light of these findings, recommendations about upcoming scientific researches were provided for educators and
families so as to help scientific achievements of concept of pre-school children improve.

Appraisal:  Again, without being able to read the study, it sounds from the abstract as if the students who attended conventional schools scored better on the measure of scientific concepts than did children receiving instruction at home.  This finding is interesting enough that I wish that i could read the article to learn more about the sample and the study itself.

1 Response to EFFECT OF HOME-BASED EDUCATION: Impact on Scientific Concepts among Six-Year Olds in Turkey

  1. The fact that Home education injure different types of skills in your child is wrong, I believe the fact that online education or home education can save your child from many unethical behavior and activities that a child face during its schooling tenure .
