[Back to Map] ICHER: Regulations

Eligibility and Required Conditions

Home education is legal in all regions of Australia.  Parents must obtain permission from educational authorities.

Supervision and/or Evaluation

Oversight requirements vary by state/territory.  The Northern Territory requires parents to record instructional schedules, total hours, and total days for each subject, and texts and other resources used, as well as a portfolio of previous year’s work reviewed during home visit.  Other regions, such as South Australia, Western Australia, and New South Wales, require alignment with government curriculum frameworks.  Others, such as the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, and Tasmania, describe their expectations for a quality education in more general terms.  Most regions also allow for state authorities to make home visits and/or conduct interviews.

Please Note: Since homeschooling regulations change periodically and legal interpretations may vary, these data should be verified with legal counsel as well.
